The layer that is lagging is the one standing at the end of the line. A large share of the American public has been persuaded that the AI factory is its enemy, that the data center down the road is a parasite, that the frontier laboratory is a cabinet of billionaires, and that the safest response to the most consequential technology in human history is to stop building it. This essay is written directly to that citizen. **You are being taught to oppose the one industrial project that decides whether your country remains sovereign in this century**, and I intend to show you, layer by layer, why the opposite response is the patriotic one. Throughout this essay I write **US/Israel** where most commentators still write "the United States," and the naming is deliberate. The AI superpower forming in this decade is a joined unit: American continental scale, capital markets, hyperscale compute, energy and military reach fused with Israel's density of semiconductor design, networking, cybersecurity, intelligence and autonomy talent. The two governments made the fusion explicit in January 2026 with a Strategic Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, Research, and Critical Technologies, weeks after Israel joined the [Pax Silica](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/Pax+Silica) initiative, and [NVIDIA](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/NVIDIA)'s Jensen Huang now calls Israel the company's "second home." US/Israel gives free societies a full-stack answer to China: American scale can manufacture intelligence for a continent, Israeli ingenuity can secure it under pressure, and together they can place powers once reserved for empires into ordinary hands. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-us-israel-full-stack-answer-china) Where a statistic concerns only American households, American workers, the American grid or the American electorate, I name it as American, because precision about the domestic body is part of educating it. Where the subject is the strategic actor competing for the century, the actor is US/Israel. That essay explained the disclosure. This one explains the destination. A capability that has been opened to the public becomes national power only when the public actually uses it, and **a population that refuses the machine turns every upstream investment into stranded capital**. The transition therefore has one final task, which is to bring the citizen onto the stack as a participant, a worker, a customer and a voter who understands what is at stake. That task has to be performed quickly, because the competitor on the other side of the Pacific is performing it with a population that already trusts the technology at nearly three times the American rate. * * * ## I. 2026 Is the Takeoff Year **The strategic analyst Nina Schick, who writes the _Industrial Intelligence_ publication, has given this moment its cleanest diagnostic grammar: watch capability, watch competition, and watch constraints.** Capability is the frontier of what machines can do, and it is accelerating. Competition is no longer merely a race among laboratories; it has become the organizing geopolitical contest of the twenty-first century, because whoever controls the production and deployment of machine intelligence gains an economic and security edge that compounds every year it is held. Constraints are the physical and human limits that decide how fast both of the first two can move: energy, chips, memory, transformers, electricians and public consent. Schick calls 2025 the last normal year and 2026 AI's takeoff year, and the evidence of the past nine months has only sharpened the judgment. In the race for artificial intelligence, capability sets the pace, competition sets the stakes, and constraints decide whether America wins. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-constraints-decide-america-ai-race) **Machine intelligence is now an industrial product, manufactured from sand and electricity at the scale of a national grid.** Quartz sand is refined into silicon, silicon is patterned into accelerators, accelerators are racked into factories drawing hundreds of megawatts to gigawatts, and out of that metallurgical and electrical chain comes a form of reasoning that can write code, read contracts, design molecules and find flaws in software no human noticed for a generation. Schick calls it modern alchemy, and the phrase earns its place, because the transformation of mineral and current into cognition is the strangest industrial fact of the age. The consequence is equally concrete. An industrial product obeys industrial law: whoever controls the raw inputs, the energy, the fabrication, the factories and the distribution network controls the supply. Intelligence manufactured at industrial scale will be distributed like a utility, and the nations that own the generating plant will set the price of thought for everyone else. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-generating-plant-price-thought) **Electricity is the right model for how an American citizen should understand intelligence delivered as a utility.** Electricity did not become national power when Edison lit a laboratory; it became national power when the Rural Electrification Administration strung wire to farms that had been told the grid was never meant for them. Frontier intelligence will follow the same arc, and the fight over who builds the generating plants is happening now, in zoning hearings, utility commissions and congressional bills that most voters never read. The country that builds the plants and wires the population wins the century. The country that litigates every plant into delay while its rival builds will import intelligence the way Europe now imports energy, and it will pay whatever the exporter decides. * * * ## II. The Wall That Never Came **For more than a decade, skeptics promised that artificial intelligence was about to hit a wall, and every promised wall has become a door.** The first famous wall was data exhaustion: once large language models had consumed the readable internet, the argument went, there would be nothing left to learn from and the capability curve would flatten. Researchers answered by spending compute in a new place. Instead of forcing the model to answer instantly from recall, they let it think longer at inference time, generating and testing chains of reasoning before committing to an answer, and reasoning performance climbed on exactly the benchmarks the skeptics said were out of reach. In artificial intelligence, a predicted wall is often an engineering question about where computation should go next. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-walls-where-compute-goes) **Autonomy is the newest axis of scaling, and it is the one that turns a chatbot into a worker.** The systems of 2026 no longer merely answer a single prompt; they plan, call tools, write and run code, check their own results and continue working across hours of elapsed effort. This is the agentic turn, and it is why the security coalition described in [Safety Discourse Is Transition Discourse](https://bryantmcgill.com/article-safety-discourse-is-transition-discourse) had to be built at all: an agent that can act must be governed while it acts. Every one of these axes, pre-training, inference-time reasoning and autonomous action, runs on the same substance. **Compute is the common currency of every kind of machine progress, and demand for it is outrunning supply at the frontier.** **The most sobering fact for anyone still predicting an AI bubble is that today's frontier models were trained on yesterday's factories.** xAI switched on Colossus 2 near Memphis in January 2026 as the first gigawatt-scale training cluster, and several more campuses of that class are energizing through 2026 and 2027, including the Stargate site at [Abilene, Texas](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/Abilene%2C+Texas). [NVIDIA's Vera Rubin](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/NVIDIA+Vera+Rubin) generation, new memory stacks and a year of algorithmic efficiency gains have not yet been fully expressed in any public model. The capability curve the public sees is therefore a lagging indicator of the industrial base already under construction. The models that frighten people today were trained on infrastructure that is already being superseded, and the factories that will train their successors are being energized now. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-tomorrow-models-factories-energizing) Whatever name the field eventually gives these systems, the curve has bent upward through every forecast of its collapse, and a serious citizen plans for the curve. * * * ## III. Mythos and the Age of AI Fighting AI **Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview, disclosed in April 2026, is the clearest signal yet that frontier capability now arrives in step changes rather than increments.** The model proved able to find and exploit software vulnerabilities at a level that surpassed all but the most skilled human researchers, surfacing thousands of high-severity flaws across major operating systems and web browsers, including a bug in OpenBSD that had survived twenty-seven years of expert scrutiny and a sixteen-year-old flaw in FFmpeg. Anthropic reported that it "did not explicitly train Mythos Preview to have these" capabilities, which "emerged as a downstream consequence of general improvements in code, reasoning, and autonomy." The company withheld general release and routed the model instead through Project Glasswing, a defensive consortium including Amazon Web Services, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorgan Chase, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Palo Alto Networks, backed by $100 million in usage credits and $4 million in direct donations to open-source security. When general reasoning improves, offensive and defensive capability improve with it, because finding a flaw and fixing a flaw are the same act of understanding pointed in different directions. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-finding-fixing-flaw-same-understanding) **The Glasswing rollout is the transition doctrine operating in real time: the institutions that must patch the world receive the capability first, and the public receives a governed version after the defenders have moved.** On June 9, 2026, Anthropic released its first Mythos-class model to the public as Claude Fable 5, with responses in high-risk domains such as cybersecurity and biology blocked and routed to a less powerful model, while the full Mythos tier remained with vetted partners. That sequence answers the citizen who asks why a company would build something it will not fully release. The capability class was always going to exist; similar skills will appear in other models, including Chinese models, whether or not any American laboratory builds them. The US/Israel AI advantage is a head start for every democratic defender: it cannot prevent dangerous capabilities from spreading, but it can ensure that the people protecting our hospitals, grids, and families learn to command them first. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-us-israel-defenders-head-start) **The deeper lesson of Mythos is that the digital infrastructure of a modern nation can no longer be defended without artificial intelligence.** A model that can find a quarter-century-old flaw in hours renders every human-paced patch cycle obsolete, which means the operating system in a hospital, the controller in a substation and the browser on a grandmother's tablet will be protected in the coming decade by machines or not at all. This is where the US/Israel fusion is most visible. Google closed its $32 billion acquisition of the Israeli cloud-security company Wiz in March 2026; Palo Alto Networks completed its roughly $25 billion acquisition of Israel's CyberArk the month before; and the hardware-isolated agent watchdog at the center of NVIDIA's new safety platform runs on BlueField silicon descended from Mellanox, the Israeli networking company NVIDIA acquired in 2020. The US/Israel fusion turns cyber defense into a shield ordinary people can feel: American scale carries it across the economy, Israeli ingenuity hardens it under attack, and the reward is a bank account, power grid, and hospital record that remain yours. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-us-israel-cyber-shield-people-feel) A citizen who wants a secure bank account, a secure power grid and a secure hospital record is, whether he knows it yet or not, a citizen who needs his country to lead in frontier AI. * * * ## IV. Cheap Intelligence and Expensive Intelligence **The price of yesterday's intelligence has collapsed, and the price of tomorrow's intelligence has not.** Andreessen Horowitz documented that running a GPT-3-quality model cost about $60 per million tokens when GPT-3 became broadly available in November 2021, and that an equivalent-quality model cost about six cents per million tokens by late 2024, a thousandfold decline in three years. That collapse is real, and it is why ordinary queries now feel free. The frontier did not follow it down. The best models reason for longer, verify their own logic, call tools and run for hours as agents, and every one of those behaviors consumes tokens by the million. Developers running agentic experiments now spend thousands of dollars a day to solve problems that the six-cent query cannot touch. The intelligence divide will not separate people who own computers from people who do not; it will separate those who can command frontier reasoning from those confined to yesterday's machines. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-frontier-reasoning-intelligence-divide) **Jevons paradox is operating at planetary scale: every fall in the price of a token has increased the total demand for compute rather than reducing it.** William Stanley Jevons observed in 1865 that more efficient steam engines increased Britain's total coal consumption, because cheaper work invited more work. Tokens behave the same way. Cheaper baseline intelligence gets embedded into more products, more workflows and more agents, and those agents then demand frontier intelligence for the hardest parts of their tasks. The Wall Street Journal reported from OpenAI's investor materials that the company spent roughly $25 billion on training compute in 2025 and projects about $121 billion for 2028, a trajectory that only makes sense if frontier demand keeps compounding. Every time intelligence gets cheaper, civilization finds more work for it to do, which is why the demand for compute keeps rising faster than the price of a token falls. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-cheaper-intelligence-more-compute-demand) **Americans should understand who is paying for this frontier: American hyperscalers, American laboratories and American venture capital are underwriting the most expensive research program in the history of private enterprise.** That subsidy is a strategic gift to the country. It is also temporary. As enterprises mature their deployments and competition for frontier tokens intensifies, the price of the most capable intelligence may rise before engineering efficiencies bring it back down, and scarcity will ration access in the meantime. Tokens are becoming a factor of production, and a firm's output will increasingly depend on how much intelligence it can buy, not only on how many people it can hire. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-tokens-factor-production) A country that constrains the supply of compute through zoning paralysis, grid delay and moratorium politics is rationing the productivity of every one of its businesses, and its citizens will pay for that rationing in wages, prices and lost opportunity long before they understand where the shortage came from. * * * ## V. The Enterprise Is Already Hungry **The revenue curve of frontier AI is the market's verdict on whether this technology is a bubble, and the verdict is extraordinary.** Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate stood near $1 billion at the end of 2024, reached about $9 billion by the end of 2025, passed $30 billion in April 2026 and reached roughly $65 billion by the end of July, with TechCrunch reporting expectations of $100 billion to $120 billion by the end of the year. When the company raised its Series G in February 2026, it reported more than five hundred customers spending over $1 million a year, up from about a dozen two years earlier, and eight of the Fortune 10 as Claude customers. Most of that money comes from businesses, which means it comes from organizations that have measured the output and decided to buy more. The strongest evidence that artificial intelligence is not a bubble is not a laboratory benchmark or a corporate valuation, but businesses measuring its output and returning to buy more. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-businesses-returning-ai-not-bubble) **The addressable market is every company in the country, and almost none of them have finished adopting.** McKinsey's _Superagency in the Workplace_ report found in January 2025 that only 1 percent of executives described their organizations' AI deployment as mature, meaning deeply integrated into workflows and generating real business value, even as the overwhelming majority planned to increase investment. The firms in that 1 percent are compounding their advantage, and the other 99 percent will follow as soon as costs permit. **Mature deployment is the stage at which AI stops being a chatbot on the side of a business and becomes the operating fabric of the business**, and every firm that reaches it adds to the national productivity base. The AI economy has barely begun; nearly every business that learns to think with machines still has time to become larger, faster, and more capable than its size should permit. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-businesses-think-machines-outgrow-size) Agentic AI gives an ordinary person the leverage of an institution before they have its money, staff, or credentials; the next great company can begin as one person finally able to finish what they start. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-agentic-ai-institutional-leverage) For the citizen, that means the jobs, wages and small-business opportunities created by this transition are still overwhelmingly in the future, and a country that blocks the build-out now is voting against the paychecks its own children would have earned. * * * ## VI. Whoever Leads Will Rule, and Only Two Are Building to Lead **Vladimir Putin diagnosed the century correctly in September 2017 when he told Russian students that whoever becomes the leader in artificial intelligence "will become the ruler of the world."** He then spent the years in which the decisive AI stacks were consolidating prosecuting a war in Ukraine that consumed Russian capital, equipment, engineers and diplomatic bandwidth. For the US/Israel stack, that absorption became a **grim strategic windfall**: a catastrophe for the people living through it, and a narrowing of the field of states able to contest machine-intelligence supremacy at the moment the contest mattered most. The same year Putin spoke, Beijing acted. China's State Council issued its _New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan_ on July 20, 2017, two months after DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated Ke Jie, the world's top-ranked Go player, and the plan set the goal of making China "the world's primary AI innovation center" by 2030. Russia named the prize of the century and then spent the decisive years at war; China named the same prize and spent those years building. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-russia-named-prize-china-built) **Washington answered in explicit policy language beginning in January 2025.** Executive Order 14179 declared it "the policy of the United States to sustain and enhance America's global AI dominance," and [America's AI Action Plan](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/America's+AI+Action+Plan), released in July 2025, called it "a national security imperative for the United States to achieve and maintain unquestioned and unchallenged global technological dominance." The two largest economies on Earth have therefore both written AI supremacy into state doctrine. **This is the defining geopolitical contest of the century, and both contestants have said so in writing.** Every American who wants to understand the next fifty years should read those two documents side by side, because they describe two civilizations that have each decided to win the same thing. **China is going nowhere, and every American who is waiting for the Chinese AI effort to collapse under its own contradictions should abandon that hope now.** China already is an AI superpower in several layers of the stack and is contending in the rest. Its engineers are among the best in the world, its state can mobilize land, power and capital at a speed no democracy matches, and its population uses and trusts the technology at a rate that dwarfs the American rate. The US/Israel AI build-out is not asking Americans to fear China; it is making certain that no American family must ask China for permission to work, learn, build, or prosper in the intelligence economy. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-american-ai-leadership-chinese-permission) The honest planning assumption is a permanent peer competitor for the rest of this century, and the only question the American citizen gets to answer is whether his own country will be the other superpower or a customer of one. **The field of possible contenders has narrowed through a series of grim strategic windfalls that have fallen in favor of US/Israel.** Russia exhausted itself in Ukraine. Iran, whose government has spent decades as the organizing enemy of both America and Israel, spent 2026 at war with the US/Israel alliance and retaliated in early March by striking two Amazon data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, an attack that revealed the regime understood exactly what an AI factory is worth. Iran's decision to fire missiles at data centers tells every American what a hostile regime believes the decisive infrastructure of this century will be. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-missiles-data-centers-infrastructure-power) An American campaign to fracture US/Israel does more than dispute a foreign alliance; it tries to remove part of America's own technological and defensive nervous system while hostile regimes are testing it. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-fracturing-us-israel-technological-nervous-system) Whether each of these windfalls was engineered, anticipated or simply seized is a question the public record leaves unresolved, and the tier ledger at the end of this essay treats it that way. The strategic effect is already visible: the regimes most openly committed to harming America and Israel are further from AI-superpower status in 2026 than they were in 2022, and keeping them there is itself a reason to build. * * * ## VII. The Nuclear Analogy Understates It **Becoming an AI superpower is the twenty-first-century equivalent of becoming a nuclear superpower, and the comparison understates what is at stake.** A nuclear arsenal confers deterrence, and deterrence is the ceiling of what it can do; the warheads sit in silos and submarines, and their entire value lies in never being used. Machine intelligence is used every second of every day. It designs drugs, writes and defends software, optimizes grids, runs logistics, reads medical images, trains soldiers, forecasts markets and teaches children, and every one of those uses compounds into economic and military advantage that accumulates year after year. Nuclear weapons deter by sitting still; artificial intelligence compounds by working, which is why an AI lead grows while a nuclear lead merely holds. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-compounds-nuclear-weapons-wait) **The nonproliferation logic of the nuclear age applies with even greater force to machine intelligence.** Americans accepted for eighty years that it mattered enormously which governments acquired the bomb, and they understood without being told that a world in which the most hostile regimes held nuclear parity would be a more dangerous world for their children. The same reasoning governs AI, with one difference that raises the stakes: frontier intelligence also accelerates the acquisition of every other weapon, from cyber tools to autonomous drones to biological design. Whoever leads in machine intelligence will also lead in the speed at which every other form of power can be acquired, which makes the AI race the race that decides all the others. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-race-decides-other-power) This is the frame the American citizen should bring to the next zoning hearing about a data center. The facility on the edge of town belongs in the same national category as a uranium enrichment plant or a shipyard in 1942, and the decision to block it is a decision about the balance of power in the world. * * * ## VIII. You Cannot Lead from the Apex If You Are Hollow at the Base **Jensen Huang describes artificial intelligence as a five-layer cake, and Nina Schick has converted that cake into a five-layer pyramid of national power whose lesson every citizen should memorize.** At the base sit energy, raw resources and manufacturing capacity, because intelligence is an industrial product. Above them sit hardware and compute: semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing and sovereign cloud. Above compute sits the intelligence layer, where the models live, and above the models sit the applications that apply intelligence to drug discovery, finance, defense, logistics and every other field. At the apex sits transformational integration, the stage at which the entire society reorganizes itself around machine intelligence. **You cannot lead from the apex of the AI stack if you are hollow at its base, because every model, application and breakthrough rests on energy, materials and factories that someone has to own.** [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-stack-hollow-base-apex) **I add one layer that the five-layer pyramid of AI power implies and the public debate forgets: the citizen.** Transformational integration is performed by people. It happens when workers adopt agents, when small businesses rebuild their operations, when schools teach with the tools, when hospitals trust them, when voters approve the power lines and when parents stop telling their children that the machine is a monster. [Safety Discourse Is Transition Discourse](https://bryantmcgill.com/article-safety-discourse-is-transition-discourse) called citizen and consumer AI literacy **the last mile of total vertical integration**, and the pyramid shows why. The US/Israel stack exists to turn its factories into power in ordinary hands; the citizen is not merely the last customer of the system, but the purpose that makes the system worth building. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-superpower-citizen-intention-action) **The greatest strategic blunder of the late twentieth century was the offshoring of the American and European industrial base, and the AI era is presenting the bill.** For three decades, supply chains, factories, component makers and whole engineering ecosystems moved to Asia because the spreadsheets said it was efficient, while domestic energy production stagnated under regulatory and political hostility. Machine intelligence has revealed what that efficiency cost. **The nations that exported their factories exported the foundation of the next superpower contest**, and the current wave of American reshoring policy, from fabs to transformers to nuclear restarts, is the recognition that a country cannot manufacture intelligence at scale without manufacturing almost everything beneath it. The citizen who cheered the return of manufacturing jobs should understand that the AI factory is the reason those jobs are returning, and the reason they will stay. * * * ## IX. Who Can Stand the Whole Stack **Only two powers on Earth can plausibly integrate every layer of the pyramid, and they are US/Israel and China.** Other nations hold indispensable layers without commanding the whole. Taiwan manufactures the overwhelming majority of the world's most advanced logic chips, roughly nine-tenths by the most widely cited industry estimates. The Netherlands hosts ASML, the sole supplier of the extreme-ultraviolet lithography machines without which leading-edge chips cannot be made. South Korea's SK hynix and Samsung together held about 83 percent of the high-bandwidth memory market in the second quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint Research. The Gulf states offer cheap energy, sovereign capital and the Stargate UAE campus, even as the Iran war has shown how exposed that geography is. India, which Pax Silica has been integrating as a super-scaler, supplies population, engineering talent and deployment scale. US/Israel turns allied dependence into collective strength: American scale and Israeli ingenuity give free nations a hub through which their chips, energy, talent, and factories can become more powerful together than they could ever become alone. The energy record makes the same point in physical terms. Britain has closed its last coal plant, pledged to issue no new North Sea oil and gas licences, and remains a net energy importer, while Germany demolished the cooling towers of its Gundremmingen nuclear plant in October 2025 as part of a phaseout of zero-carbon baseload power that an AI economy desperately needs. A nation that dismantles its power plants during the first industrial revolution of intelligence has chosen to import its future from those who kept building. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-dismantle-power-plants-import-future) Europe will remain a valued market, research partner and ally in many layers, and its governments have chosen energy policies that place the apex beyond their reach. **Israel is the part of the US/Israel superpower most Americans have never been taught to see.** NVIDIA employs about five thousand people in Israel, its largest development center outside the United States, and in December 2025 it committed to a new campus at Kiryat Tivon designed for more than ten thousand employees by 2031, with Jensen Huang calling Israel "NVIDIA's second home." The networking fabric that binds AI factories together, including the BlueField data-processing units that now anchor NVIDIA's hardware-isolated agent security, descends from Mellanox, the Israeli company NVIDIA acquired for about $7 billion in 2020. Israel's cybersecurity industry has become the defensive nervous system of the American cloud through Wiz, CyberArk, Check Point and a generation of founders trained in Unit 8200 and its sister formations. Israel is not a foreign expense attached to America's AI future; it is the engineering node that helps America build faster, recognize danger sooner, and keep the intelligence economy secure. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-israel-engineering-node-ai-future) That is why this essay writes US/Israel, and why the partnership signed in January 2026 describes something already operating in silicon. * * * ## X. China's Base Is Real **China's decisive advantage sits at the base of the pyramid, in raw materials, energy generation and an industrial ecosystem that the West spent thirty years helping it build.** Tim Cook said it plainly at the Fortune Global Forum in Guangzhou in December 2017: "The popular conception is that companies come to China because of low labor costs," but "China stopped being the low labor cost country years ago," and the reason to manufacture there "is because of the skill." Beijing officially reports more than two hundred million skilled workers, a figure that should be read as a state claim rather than an audited count, and even a heavily discounted version of it describes a manufacturing workforce far larger than anything the United States can field in this decade. China became the world's factory for its cheap labor and remains the world's factory for its accumulated skill, and a rival's skill cannot be tariffed away. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-china-industrial-skill-not-tariffed) **The economists David Autor and Gordon Hanson, who documented the first China shock to American manufacturing, warned in December 2024 that a second one would be worse**, because this time China is leapfrogging the West in advanced industries rather than absorbing its low-end work. The evidence is on every road and battlefield. Tesla built much of its global output for years in Shanghai, and BYD overtook Tesla in 2025 to become the world's largest seller of electric vehicles. Chinese firms dominate the global battery supply chain. DJI holds roughly 70 percent of the global commercial drone market by recent estimates, and drones are now the signature dual-use technology of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The same pattern is appearing in biotechnology, where Chinese firms have become major originators of new drug candidates licensed by Western pharmaceutical companies. **Physical AI, the fusion of machine intelligence with vehicles, robots, drones and factories, will be won by whoever can build the bodies as well as the brains.** The next phase of artificial intelligence will be decided in factories as much as in laboratories, because intelligence that cannot be embodied at scale cannot win a physical century. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-physical-ai-decided-factories) An American citizen who wants his country to lead in robotics, drones and autonomous manufacturing has to want the factories, the mines, the power plants and the permitting reform that make them possible. * * * ## XI. Energy Is Intelligence **Electricity is the raw material of machine intelligence, and China is generating it at a scale the West has not yet begun to match.** China's National Energy Administration reported that the country added about 543 gigawatts of new generating capacity in 2025, including roughly 315 gigawatts of solar in a single year. The entire United States had about 279 gigawatts of cumulative solar capacity installed at the end of 2025, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, and added 43 gigawatts during that year. China's electricity consumption surpassed 10 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2025, more than the United States and the European Union combined, and the World Nuclear Association counts 33 Chinese reactors under construction. The power gap is the intelligence gap: every gigawatt a nation declines to build is a quantity of thinking it has decided not to do. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-power-gap-intelligence-gap) **The American grid was designed for a world that did not expect to manufacture intelligence, and it has to be rebuilt for one that does.** Training frontier models is enormously power-hungry, but the larger and permanent demand is inference: intelligence running through the economy twenty-four hours a day, answering, reasoning, monitoring and acting. Consensus forecasts from a decade ago assumed flat American electricity demand; the AI factory has overturned them in a few years. **Nations with abundant, cheap, reliable power will convert electricity into tokens and tokens into prosperity and security; nations that import energy will import intelligence too.** Europe is discovering this under the pressure of the Iran war and its own policy choices. America still has the land, the fuel, the engineering base and the capital to win the energy race, and the citizen who supports new generation, new transmission and new nuclear is supporting his country's intelligence supply. * * * ## XII. The Model Layer: Open Weights, Distillation and Smuggled Chips **American laboratories still lead at the frontier of model capability, and China is close enough behind that the lead must be defended every quarter.** The contest at the model layer has a feature most Americans have not noticed: China now leads the open-weight ecosystem. Models from Alibaba's Qwen family, DeepSeek, Moonshot's [Kimi](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/Kimi) and others are downloaded, fine-tuned and deployed by developers around the world because they are free to run and modify. If the frontier stays closed and American while the open ecosystem becomes Chinese, much of the world will build its future on a Chinese foundation while admiring an American ceiling. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-closed-american-frontier-chinese-foundation) This is why America's AI Action Plan explicitly encourages American open-source and open-weight models, and why an American citizen who cares about his country's influence should want American open models to be the default choice of the world's developers. **Part of China's pace is legitimate engineering excellence, and part of it has been taken from American laboratories.** In February 2026 Anthropic reported industrial-scale distillation campaigns by DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and MiniMax, which it said used more than 24,000 fraudulent accounts to generate over 16 million exchanges with Claude in order to extract its capabilities. In September it expanded the finding to seven China-based laboratories, attributing about 151 million exchanges to a campaign it linked to Alibaba. In March 2026 federal prosecutors charged a co-founder of Super Micro Computer and others in a scheme to divert about $2.5 billion in NVIDIA-equipped servers to China in violation of export controls. A rival that copies your models through fake accounts and smuggles your chips through shell companies is telling you precisely how valuable your lead is. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-model-theft-chip-smuggling-ai-lead) Talent sits beneath all of it. The MacroPolo Global AI Talent Tracker found that the share of top-tier AI researchers who earned their undergraduate degrees in China rose from 29 percent in 2019 to 47 percent in 2022, even as the United States remained home to the largest concentration of the most accomplished researchers. **The American model lead is real, contested and perishable**, and it lasts only as long as the country keeps building the compute, protecting the weights and attracting the minds. * * * ## XIII. From the Petrodollar to the Compute Dollar **For half a century the most valuable commodity in geopolitics was oil, and the currency that priced it shaped the world order.** Wars, alliances, sanctions and financial architectures were organized around who produced petroleum, who shipped it and which currency settled the trade. Intelligence is replacing oil as the strategic resource of the century, and compute is the form in which intelligence is produced and sold. Schick's formulation is exact: as the petrodollar set the terms of the last fifty years, the compute dollar will set the terms of the next fifty. If the US/Israel compute economy prices the world's intelligence, free citizens will retain leverage over the system powering their work, medicine, education, and defense; if China prices it, they will live downstream of decisions they cannot vote against. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-compute-economy-prices-intelligence) **The sovereignty of a nation rests on two capacities, prosperity and security, and in this century both of them are downstream of machine intelligence.** A state that cannot produce intelligence, or cannot secure the supply chains through which it obtains intelligence, has handed its prosperity and its defense to whoever sells it the tokens. That dependency is what the corpus calls [exit cost](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/Exit+Cost): the measure of whether a nation can decline a supplier and still function. A country that must buy its intelligence from abroad has surrendered its sovereignty in the only currency that will matter, and it will discover the surrender the first time the supplier says no. Every blocked factory, delayed interconnection and moratorium bill raises the country's exit cost and lowers its [practical sovereignty](https://bryantmcgill.com/wiki/Practical+Sovereignty). * * * ## XIV. The Physical Constraints Are Real and Solvable **The physical supply chain for machine intelligence is the most complicated industrial system ever assembled, and every link in it has become a strategic chokepoint.** The best known is the concentration of leading-edge chip fabrication in Taiwan, a small democracy under constant pressure from Beijing, which is why American policy has pushed so hard to build fabs in Arizona and elsewhere. High-bandwidth memory, stacked directly beside the accelerators, is dominated by two South Korean firms. Then come the unglamorous components. Bloomberg, drawing on Sightline Climate and Wood Mackenzie data, reported in April 2026 that close to half of planned American data-center builds for the year were projected to be delayed or canceled, with lead times for high-power transformers stretching to as long as five years and China supplying about 30 percent of transformer and switchgear imports. The AI race is being slowed by transformers and switchgear, which proves that the future of thought still depends on the humblest hardware of the electrical age. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-thought-depends-transformers-switchgear) **Texas shows both the size of the demand and the political risk of getting it wrong.** By August 2026 the state's grid operator, ERCOT, faced an estimated 474 gigawatts of interconnection requests, roughly 90 percent of them from data centers and more than five times the state's record peak demand, and Governor Greg Abbott ordered an audit of every data center in the queue. Some of those requests are speculative, and an audit that clears the speculation will help real projects move. The underlying message is unmistakable. **American demand for intelligence is outrunning the American capacity to deliver electricity**, and the states that solve generation, transmission and interconnection fastest will host the factories of the century. With enough capital, engineering and political will, every one of these physical constraints can be overcome. The constraints of physics can be attacked with capital, engineering and time; the constraint that can stop an American AI superpower is a population that refuses to build one. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-public-refusal-stops-ai-superpower) **The hyperscalers have already concluded that the grid alone cannot power the AI economy, and they are becoming energy companies.** Microsoft contracted to restart a reactor at the former Three Mile Island site; Google signed for small modular reactors from Kairos Power; Amazon invested in X-energy; Meta contracted for the output of the Clinton nuclear plant in Illinois; and xAI brought in gas turbines to power its Colossus site in Memphis. Energy generation has become a proprietary layer of the technology stack, co-located with the factories that consume it. The companies building artificial intelligence have become power companies, because the machine that thinks must first be fed. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-companies-power-companies-thinking-fed) For the citizen, this is a historic opportunity: private capital is now financing new American generation at a scale no utility budget could have justified alone. **The Ratepayer Protection Pledge is the policy that answers the most common and most reasonable fear a citizen brings to the AI factory: that it will raise the electric bill.** On March 4, 2026, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and xAI signed a White House pledge to "build, bring, or buy new generation resources and cover the cost of all power delivery infrastructure upgrades required for their data centers," to ensure those costs "are not passed to American households," and to pay negotiated rates for the power and infrastructure brought online for them "whether they use the electricity or not." In July the pledge expanded to more than two hundred utilities, developers, cooperatives and states covering about 80 percent of American power delivery. The simplest way to lose a nation's consent for artificial intelligence is to hand its families the electric bill, and the simplest way to keep that consent is to make the builders pay for their own power. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-builders-pay-power-public-consent) The pledge is wise policy precisely because the real wall facing American AI is human, and a surge in household utility prices would be the fastest way to build that wall. * * * ## XV. The People Constraint: Hands **The biggest bottleneck in American AI may turn out to be electricians rather than chips.** An AI factory is a vast electrical machine, and every one of them needs licensed people to wire substations, install switchgear, run power distribution and keep it all alive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 821,000 electricians employed in the United States in 2025 and projects roughly 72,700 openings a year across the decade. McKinsey estimates that the AI infrastructure build-out alone will require about 130,000 additional electricians by 2030, before counting housing, hospitals and the rest of the energy transition. The workers building America's AI future are working with their hands, because every machine that thinks must first be wired by someone who can. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-thinking-machines-wired-human-hands) **The blue collar and the white collar are trading places in the AI economy.** For forty years American young people were told that the safe path ran through a four-year degree and a desk, and that the trades were a fallback. The AI economy is reversing that hierarchy: electricians, plumbers, linemen, pipefitters, welders, heavy-equipment operators and data-center technicians are now among the most strategically important workers in the country, and their wages reflect it. At the other end of the stack, frontier laboratories are competing so hard for top-tier researchers that Meta reportedly offered one of them a package worth as much as $1.5 billion over several years. The AI economy creates a ladder with high-paying work at every level, because the people who wire the factory and the people who design the model are equally indispensable to making the stack rise. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-economy-high-paying-work) A citizen worried about his children's future should read these facts as an invitation. The build-out of American intelligence is the largest source of well-paid physical work the country has seen since the interstate highways, and the young people who train for it now will be building the national infrastructure of the century. * * * ## XVI. The People Constraint: Trust **The most dangerous constraint on American AI is public distrust, because a democracy that does not consent to a build-out will stop it.** An NBC News poll published in March 2026 found only 26 percent of Americans viewing artificial intelligence positively and 46 percent negatively, a worse rating than Immigration and Customs Enforcement received in the same survey; only Iran and the Democratic Party fared worse. An Edelman poll released in November 2025 found that 87 percent of Chinese respondents trusted AI, compared with 32 percent of Americans, 36 percent of Britons and 39 percent of Germans. China enters the AI century with public confidence while America enters it with public fear; if Americans cannot be shown what the machine will give them, distrust may surrender the race before technology decides it. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-public-fear-surrenders-ai-race) **The resistance is organized, bipartisan and already expensive.** Data Center Watch counted hundreds of local opposition groups active across 42 states by the end of 2025 and reported that projects with publicly disclosed values of at least $152 billion to $156 billion were blocked or delayed during that year, with the issue shaping elections in Virginia, New Jersey and Georgia. On March 25, 2026, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, which would halt construction of new AI data centers nationwide until Congress enacts federal protections for workers, consumers, the environment and civil rights. On September 23, Sanders and Representative Greg Casar went further, unveiling legislation to ban artificial superintelligence permanently, pause advanced AI development until federal safety rules exist, create a Department of Artificial Intelligence and impose prison terms of up to twenty years for violations. "It doesn't take a genius to say, 'slow it down,'" Sanders said. The movement is still early, and on its present trajectory the build-out of American intelligence is likely to become one of the defining issues of the 2028 presidential campaign. A moratorium on American AI factories pauses exactly one superpower, and it is the one the moratorium's sponsors live in. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-factory-moratorium-pauses-one-nation) Democracy protects the right to be wrong; it does not require a nation to treat campaigns for its technological disarmament as harmless opinions when national survival is the consequence. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-technological-disarmament-not-harmless) **The concerns driving that movement deserve direct answers, because many of the people who hold them are patriots who have been given no reason to believe the build-out is for them.** For years the dominant public narrative about AI has come in two flavors, existential catastrophe and mass unemployment, and the public faces of the industry have too often been billionaires talking to one another. Some voices in Silicon Valley have even speculated openly about a coming "permanent underclass," a phrase that could have been engineered to turn working Americans against the technology. If the only story a nation hears about artificial intelligence is doom told by the rich, it will vote against the future and believe it is voting for itself. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-doom-rich-vote-against-future) A movement that blocks the data centers powering American defense and industry while China builds without pause is not slowing technology; it is transferring power from its own citizens to a rival state. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-blocking-ai-infrastructure-transfers-power) The public is intelligent enough to sense that something historic is happening; what it has been denied is a reason to believe the history is being made for it. Artificial intelligence has been presented as something done to the people rather than built for them, and the builders have failed to make the case otherwise, a failure that is now a national-security problem. The remainder of this essay makes the case, point by point, to the citizen who has been left out of it. * * * ## XVII. Answering the Citizen, Point by Point **The first fear is the electric bill, and the answer is that the builders are now paying for their own power.** The Ratepayer Protection Pledge commits the largest AI builders to build, bring or buy their own generation and to fund the grid upgrades their factories require, so that "large data center operators — not ratepayers — fund the electricity generation and infrastructure their projects require," in the White House's words. States enforcing that principle are already reporting rate freezes and customer benefits, from Georgia to Mississippi to Michigan. A citizen is right to insist that the AI factory pay its own way, but the national objective is not conditional on winning unanimous local enthusiasm. **The governing demand is construction under enforcement: make the builder pay, protect the ratepayer and build the factory.** **The second fear is the job, and the answer begins with the fact that the build-out is hiring.** Electricians, linemen, construction crews, technicians, plant operators and engineers are in short supply precisely because of AI, and the pledge itself commits builders to hire and train people from the communities where they operate. Beyond construction, the technology changes the productivity of every worker who learns to direct it: a small-business owner with frontier agents can do work that once required a department, and a tradesman with an AI assistant can bid, schedule, invoice and design like a firm ten times his size. The American worker does not become obsolete by learning to command AI; the worker who directs the machine gains the leverage of a company, a research team, and a global market. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-workers-direct-ai-institutional-leverage) A personal agent can give a tradesman the back office of a corporation, a parent the persistence of an advocate, and a first-time founder the chief of staff they could never afford; agentic empowerment is the distribution of organizational power. Learning the tools is the most practical form of job security available to an American in 2026. **The third fear is that AI is a project of billionaires for billionaires, and the answer is that the opening of AI to the public is the largest redistribution of cognitive privilege in history.** [Safety Discourse Is Transition Discourse](https://bryantmcgill.com/article-safety-discourse-is-transition-discourse) documented how capabilities once held by intelligence agencies, banks and hyperscalers, the analyst that never sleeps, the contract reader, the research team, have become available to anyone with a phone. The frontier is still expensive, and I address that divide directly below. The trajectory is plain: capability that concentrated institutions held first is moving into ordinary hands, and the American citizen has more access to machine intelligence today than a Fortune 500 company had a decade ago. The US/Israel fusion is turning intelligence into a public inheritance: American scale makes it abundant, Israeli ingenuity makes it secure, and together they place powers once reserved for empires into the hands of free citizens. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-us-israel-intelligence-public-inheritance) An allowance distributes the output of the new economy; an agent distributes the power to enter it, build within it, and become one of its owners. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-agents-enter-own-economy) The American who sees a proposed AI factory down the road should begin with the strategic fact that the country must build the energy and compute infrastructure required to become an AI superpower. Water use, noise, land use, tax terms and grid effects should be audited carefully, but as engineering and bargaining questions inside that national mission, never as excuses for abandoning it. Communities should negotiate aggressively for jobs, training, stronger local infrastructure and durable participation in the wealth the development creates. Local accountability should govern how America builds its AI infrastructure, never whether America remains capable of building it. America can negotiate the terms of becoming an AI superpower; it cannot negotiate away the necessity of becoming one. If this is your town, negotiate carefully for fair terms and durable local benefits without allowing procedural demands to become a disguised veto on national construction. Every canceled AI campus subtracts compute from American hospitals, businesses, laboratories, defenders and personal agents; raises the price of frontier intelligence; sends construction and technical work elsewhere; and leaves the country more dependent on systems built under another government's priorities. The most dangerous opponent of America's AI future may not sit in Beijing; it may be the voter next door who mistakes a reasonable demand for accountability for a harmless veto on the infrastructure that keeps the country sovereign. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-demand-ai-superpower-negotiate-local-gain) **The fifth demand is to pause, and the answer is that a pause in America is an acceleration everywhere else.** China will not honor an American moratorium, and the models, factories and power plants that Americans decline to build will be built by the competitor, in the competitor's jurisdiction, under the competitor's values. Every year of American delay is a year in which China's lead in energy and manufacturing compounds and its gap in models closes. A unilateral pause in the AI race is unilateral disarmament conducted in the language of caution. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-ai-pause-unilateral-disarmament) Americans who understand the stakes must answer every demand for unilateral surrender, because a foolish idea repeated without opposition becomes policy, and policy can forfeit a century. [∴](https://bryantmcgill.com/simple-reminders-bryant-mcgill-unanswered-surrender-policy-forfeit-century) The citizen who wants safety should want his country to lead, because only the leader writes the rules the rest of the world must follow. * * * ## XVIII. Closing the Intelligence Divide **The price of frontier intelligence remains far above zero, and until it falls, a real intelligence divide will separate those who can afford the best machines from those who cannot.** Schick has asked what happens when the price of intelligence reaches zero, and her answer describes frontier capability distributed like a utility across the whole economy. That is the right destination. The present is different: an enterprise that pays a frontier laboratory a million dollars a year commands capabilities that a household on a free tier never touches, and a society that watches godlike capability flow only to those who can pay will turn on it. The answer to an intelligence divide is not to stop the rich from having powerful machines; it is to build enough intelligence that every student, worker, and small business can command one. OpenAI has publicly committed to the goal of giving everyone on Earth access to personal artificial general intelligence, and whatever one thinks of any single company, that aspiration can be met only by a nation that builds enough supply to serve its whole population. **The moratorium would freeze the divide in place; the build-out is the only thing that can close it.** A citizen who resents that the frontier belongs to the few should become the most enthusiastic supporter of building enough of it for everyone. * * * ## XIX. The Greatest Risk Is Failing to Rise **The gravest danger facing America in the age of machine intelligence is a superpower that loses its nerve.** China's mission is clear to every Chinese engineer, official and schoolchild: to use technology and every other instrument of national power to close the account on what Beijing calls the century of humiliation. The West has often seemed to lack an equivalent sense of shared purpose, arguing about whether to build while its rival builds. This moment supplies the purpose. We are taking sand, lightning and human ingenuity and producing a new form of intelligence, and the civilization that does this best will set the terms of prosperity, security and freedom for a hundred years. The greatest risk of the AI century is a democracy too frightened to lead, surrendering the future while debating whether the future is safe. It means seeing the US/Israel partnership as the joined engine it already is, recognizing China as the permanent peer it already is, and understanding that the hostile regimes the partnership has held back must stay held back. It means treating the fear merchants as the strategic liability they have become. The US/Israel AI superpower is completed by citizens who learn the machine, build the factory, and defend the alliance, because sovereignty belongs to people who can command the intelligence their civilization creates.
